Every year, residents of the Niagara Region see an influx of so many visitors from around the world eager to set eyes on the extraordinary wonder of the Falls, experience our history in Niagara on the Lake, relax at our beautiful parks and beaches, participate in our sporting events, and of course enjoy our fabulous spas, wineries, breweries and restaurants. And it wouldn’t be the Niagara Region without our fresh fruit, vegetable, and bakery stands along our roads for everyone, not just our visitors, to appreciate. If you live in Niagara, you already know what a wonderful place it truly is. But sometimes, because we live here, we forget to explore our own region. There really is something for everyone -- whether you are looking for a staycation or vacation, or just good fresh food and drinks. So, set aside the time to take a fresh look at your surroundings. People come from all over the world to see it … for good reason!
But, just like back in the day when parents said, “Do your homework first”, before you, (now a homeowner) get to exploring and enjoying yourself, you should address those summer chores. When the sun is out, however, not all outdoor chores feel like chores! The warm weather and sunshine can make it easier to clean up our outdoor living areas. And, at the end of the day, we could be one step or many, closer to relaxing in our summer oasis. Perhaps, in our newly clean outdoor space we may even be ready to entertain our friends and family. For some, setting a deadline and a reward can make us work that much faster! But you don’t have to get everything done in a day! Set a schedule, and deal with a few chores from your maintenance list each day while relaxing and enjoying the rest of day. Tackle the indoor chores on a rainy day. Before you know it, you can have all of the items done.
Just remember that many hands can make lighter work. Perhaps you can invent an enjoyable way to get your whole family involved. Maybe you can turn the chores into a game or a competition. Is work really work, if everyone is having fun? If you have extended family members and/or friends that are willing, you can go from one home to the next and help each other out — sharing some games, a meal or a party when everything is done! Regardless of how you approach summer maintenance chores, you do need to protect your home, making sure it is safe and providing you with a healthy place in which to live. Keep in mind that home maintenance issues can be unique to your property or home, so a general summer maintenance checklist is just a starting point.
Items specific to your individual home and property may not be addressed in a general maintenance list, so it is important to take a really good look around at your specific house for items that may need attention or perhaps repairs or replacement. A home’s structure, efficiency, security, healthiness, curb appeal and energy bills, etc. rely on proper maintenance and repairs. If you encounter something you are unsure of, or are not qualified to properly fix or replace, call a professional. Some things must be done by a licensed professional (e.g., electrical and plumbing issues, etc.). There are just some tasks that are not DIY projects.
