'Diva Den' inspired by the 'Man Cave'

Men have their “man caves,” the space where they go to get away from it all, but what does that leave for women?

While there may be discussions, jokingly or otherwise, that women have the rest of the house, it is likely that most people would agree that the home is “shared space”.

So what about a special room of her own for those that want one—the lighter side of a ‘man cave’- one she can decorate as she wishes, no compromises - with the sole purpose to be a place where she can retreat; relax; work; create and grow.

Names for such a space are appearing on social media, being called, with great imagination, Mom Cave; Ma’am Cave; Diva Den; Lady Lounge; Femme Den; She Shed or Lady Lair and these spaces are becoming increasingly popular.

For some women, this will be a room for working from home that is not just an office of sorts, but a place where she can feel empowered and inspired. For others, it may be a space for hobbies, like painting, sculpting or gardening, or for yoga or a home gym.

Perhaps it is a library for reading, or a space for entertaining friends.

Regardless, its purpose is solely hers and is designed with that in mind.

Some women are opting to reinvent their unused, existing storage shed, outbuilding or garage, making it their personal retreat. After all, sheds do not have to be used to house critters, cobwebs, and junk.

But for those without a shed or whose sheds are fully utilized, there are options to remodel an extra bedroom, underutilized dining space, or area of a basement. From windows and doors, location, cabinetry, flooring and paint choices, the room can be customized to her liking.

She might choose a lounge look, lining the walls in rich walnut or mahogany, shelves of hard-covered books and specialty wines; or she might choose a spa retreat with all the luxuries one would expect for pampering one’s self. Maybe it is a simple place, where natural light streams in on an easy-to-clean floor, where soil from a planting table or paint spatters can be easily wiped up.

The room can be as unique as the person occupying it. The only limitations are one’s imagination, floor space, and of course, budget!

While this trend of a gender specific living space seems to focus on a woman’s desires, that is not to say that the room cannot be shared with friends and family. It is simply designed by her--for her.  Of course on a humorous note, secret doors are also an option for those seeking an escape!
